Week 3 Story: Coffee, Coffee, and More Coffee

From the beginning of time there was coffee, and coffee was everything to people. It fueled the lives of people from sleep deprivation, brought people together, and gave people the opportunity to drink something tasty. But, out of all the coffee shops in a small town, people were forbidden to go to Starbucks. While many people wondered why they couldn't go to Starbucks, they all followed the rules and stayed away.

But, the beauty of the drinks and the different logo continued to spark peoples interest. You could always smell the freshly brewed coffee and a small hint of caramel when ever you walked past any Starbucks location.

Sometimes the coffee shop even offered samples of their coffees and pastries, but everyone still stayed away. They went to all the other local coffee shops, and got their daily brews and treats. But, then one day, a younger woman did something unexpected. She walked right into the Starbucks store, looked at the menu and ordered a drink. Lots of people witnessed this young woman go into the store but no one actually thought she would drink the forbidden coffee. But, she did just that. She ordered herself a grande caramel macchiato and a butter croissant and sat herself down in their chairs. She pulled out her computer and reached for her drink and took a sip from it. Everyone who was watching through the glass and the workers were surprised by this brave woman. She then proceeded to continue to drink her coffee and eat her croissant. When people realized that nothing bad was going to happen to the woman, the crowds rushed into the coffee shop to try the coffee and pastries they had not been allowed to eat and drink.

Arthor Notes:
This story is part of the Bible Women unit. Story source: King James Bible (1611): Genesis 2 and Genesis 3

I chose to change the story of Eve and her decision to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. While in the original story Eve had been tempted by the serpent to eat from the tree that her and Adam were forbidden to eat from, I decided to choose coffee as a similar action. While we all know and "love" Starbucks and their drinks, we are often persuaded by the name of the brand. While in my opinion Starbucks isn't the best coffee option, its well known by everyone. So, I decided to make Starbucks the forbidden coffee shop for people. The temptation to want to go in and drink coffee from Starbucks but have it as not allowed was what was similar in Eve's story. Although with Eve, when she ate from the tree, sin was created. When the young woman drank Starbucks, nothing bad happened but and influx of customers and coffee lovers.

  1. Hi Julianna! I thought this story was really amusing! The idea of everyone avoiding the ever-present, ever-popular Starbucks in favor of local coffee shops is funny to visualize. I did wonder, however, why they were avoiding it in the first place? The Bible story has God telling Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit, is there some coffee dictator in your story that makes rules about where people can get their coffee? I would love to know more backstory on why Starbucks was anathema until your "Eve" led the way, or a reason why she decided to break from the crowd and go in. She made it seem so normal, as if she just didn't even know that Starbucks was to be avoided. I was also surprised that there weren't any consequences. What if there maybe was some sort of consequence for choosing the forbidden coffee, but it wasn't bad like people seemed to think it would be?

  2. Julianna,
I love this retelling, it gave me a great laugh. I’m not sure why everyone had to avoid Starbucks, but I’m glad that in the end they weren’t eternally punished for someone drinking the coffee there. In fact, I think it’s funnier that nothing bad happened at all, because why would it? This story was short and sweet and I enjoyed it a lot (much like a good caramel macchiato).

  3. Hi, I like this unique twist on an old biblical story. What a clever use of a modern day staple! I like that nothing bad happened to her for going in and getting a drink. Some stories are so dark and full of punishment, its nice to see a change of pace.

  4. I love that this was a modern spin on Eve's decision to eat the apple. It seems kind of silly to avoid a starbucks! But honestly, some people actually do avoid it in real life. It is like.. some hipster taboo. But hey, if it tastes good, it tastes good. Who cares if it is a mainstream coffee shop? So this story takes this weird strange reality and manipulates it to fit Eve's story. I really liked it.
